Welcome to Visual Art at Castle North Middle School The visual arts program at CNMS will be a studio centered course supplemented by activities in art history, art criticism, and aesthetics (the philosophy of art). Students will be challenged to broaden and deepen their understanding of what art is all about. The course is intended to open their eyes and minds to the infinite possibilities the visual arts offer. While the percentage of students entering art-related careers is small, we are all consumers and viewers of art. Student evaluations include, but are not limited to: written assignments (essays, critiques, journal responses), quizzes and tests, daily studio assignments, and major projects (paintings, drawings, sculptures, or written assignments lasting more than three class periods). Course work will be assigned a letter grade. Assignments are given a score weight based on their complexity and duration. For example, a 1 day studio project would be assigned 1 letter grade. A major studio project, however, may warrant 3 to 5 letter grades. The letter grades are recorded and averaged to determine the nine-week grade. It is important for the student to complete and turn in, on time, each and every assignment. Students have been encouraged to use their agenda book to record assignments and homework. If a student is absent, it is their responsibility to inquire about work missed. Information about the art history bell work, studio work and general information can be accessed via the web site. Our goal in the visual arts department is to create an environment which is as open and creative as possible. Students are asked to play the roles of an art historian, an art critic and artist when they come to class. They are asked to look closely and think deeply (aka the aesthetic experience). Ultimately . . . quoting Robert Henri (The Art Spirit) “When the artist is alive in any person, whatever his kind of work may be, he becomes an inventive, searching, daring, self-expressive creature.”
